Google's PageSpeed test is a performance test for web pages. On the basis of a checklist it is examined which possible performance improvements are missing in the website. Based on this a score between 0 and 100 is calculated. Only when all possible performance improvements have been implemented, a score of 100 will be given.

First of all it is important to emphasize that not all performance improvements of Google PageSpeed are related to just speed. For example, the test also includes user-friendliness checks for mobile users (for example, are the buttons big enough to press with a finger?). So Google puts you a bit on the wrong track with the name 'PageSpeed'.

This is a set of metrics that further quantifies the user experience. According to Google, the components that make up these Web Vitals are based on various studies, and ultimately intended to help website owners further improve their user experience. Google has announced that this will become an even higher ranking factor in 2021.

Google defines page experience as -aspects that measure how users experience a web page beyond the pure information value of that page-.

So this is not so much about how relevant your content is - that is of course also measured and is a hugely important factor - but more about the things around it. Your content can be great, but if your user has to wait too long before the page loads or is flooded with pop-ups and banners he or she will not be very happy about it.

Good to know is that Google continues to see the relevance of your content as the most important factor, even if the page experience is not good.

But that is no reason to write off page experience as unimportant. Here's the thing: when Google doubts between different pages because they seem to be equally relevant, page experience will be the deciding factor in who 'wins' and is therefore on top of the results page.

Google already takes a number of factors into account in the current search algorithm, namely mobile friendliness, website security (including an encrypted HTTPS connection), and whether you have intrusive popups or notifications on the page.

The LCP measures the speed at which your web page loads. The main question is: how long does it take until all the content of your website is actually shown on the screen?

“Every second counts!”

But what is the difference between this metric and, for example, DOMContentLoaded (DCL) or First Contentful Paint (FCP)? DCL and FCP do not always say something about what the visitor sees on the screen. Or that the loaded content is also relevant for the visitor.

LCP, on the other hand, focuses on the user himself: it measures when the largest, and therefore probably also the most important content part is loaded (text or image). And a website with a good LCP score therefore tells the visitor more quickly whether the page is of use to him/her.

LCP and your own website: this is how you take it into account
A good score on LCP is a loading time of less than 2.5 seconds. Is the charging time between 2.5 and 4 seconds? Then there is room for improvement. Does loading take longer than 4 seconds? Then there is a greater chance that your visitor will immediately leavea your site. And you don't want that.

Important factors influencing your LCP

There are 4 factors to take into account, because they strongly influence the LCP. Below we list them for you.

Server response time The faster the response time of the server, the faster the content can load onto the page. This has a positive influence on the LCP. In order to optimise the server response time, check how your server handles the content at all. You measure this with Time to First Byte (TTFB). From there you can see what is relevant for you to optimise.
JavaScript and CSS that block playback JavaScript and CSS are both sources that can block the content display on the page. And thus also slow down the LCP. Prevent this as much as possible by delaying the running of non-critical scripts and style sheets until the largest part of the content is loaded.
Loading time of the resources Not only JavaScript and CSS affect LCP, other external files, such as images and videos, also affect LCP. The more processing power and memory your website requires from the server, the slower the pages load. You can optimise this by compressing images and text files, for example, or pre-rend important resources.
Client-side rendering In client-side rendering, the content of your website is displayed using JavaScript. Lately you see more and more people using JavaScript frameworks. And that's not surprising, because they offer a lot of possibilities and are easy to use. One problem here: it can be detrimental to your LCP. Then there is a chance that the visitor sees nothing or can't do anything on the page, until all critical scripts have been executed.

Apply pre-rendering
